Add Alt Text to Important Images in Squarespace
- Open your Squarespace site and navigate to the page containing the important images you want to update, then click Edit to enter editing mode.
- Select the first image:
- Hover over the image block.
- Click Edit to open the Image Block editor.
- In the Image Block editor, open the Content tab.
- Locate the Alt Text field and enter a clear, concise description that communicates the purpose or meaning of the image (e.g., “Portrait of team member Sarah Lee” or “Product photo of handcrafted ceramic mug”).
- If the image acts as a link or button:
- Write alt text that describes the action rather than the picture (e.g., “Go to Portfolio page,” “View Product Details”).
- For images inside galleries:
- Click the gallery block → Edit.
- Open the Manage Images panel.
- Select each image and enter alt text in the Alt Text field.
- For background images in sections or banners:
- Select the section → click Background.
- Because background images cannot receive alt text, ensure any important information conveyed by the background appears as real text within the section.
- Repeat steps 2–7 for all important images across the page, ensuring each has accurate alt text that reflects its purpose.
- Switch to Mobile preview and confirm that any mobile-only images also have proper alt text using the same steps.
- Click Preview to double-check that meaningful images have alt text and purely decorative images were not mistakenly labeled.
- Save and publish your changes, then use your browser’s accessibility inspector on the live site to confirm that all important images include the correct alt attributes.
