Perform the 60-Second Tab Test in Squarespace
- Publish your site so the latest changes are visible on the live page.
- Open the live page in your browser and click anywhere near the top of the page to give the browser keyboard focus.
- Press the Tab key once and identify which element receives focus. Confirm a visible focus indicator appears (outline, underline, or highlight).
- Continue pressing Tab repeatedly for 60 seconds to move through all interactive elements:
- Navigation links
- Buttons and image links
- Form fields and dropdowns
- Icons (hamburger menu, close icons, arrows)
- Galleries and sliders
- Watch for accessibility issues:
- Elements that never receive focus,
- Focus indicators that are missing or too faint,
- Focus jumping in an illogical order,
- Elements that require a mouse to activate.
- Use Enter or Space to test activation of focused elements:
- Open menus, submit forms, and navigate links using only the keyboard.
- Press Shift + Tab to ensure reverse navigation works consistently without skipping elements or trapping focus.
- Open any dropdowns, mobile menus, or lightboxes during the test and verify:
- You can tab into the opened element,
- Focus stays within it until closed,
- You can close it via keyboard without getting stuck.
- If issues appear, return to Squarespace Editor to fix them:
- Add or improve focus styles via Design → Site Styles,
- Add alt text or labels to unlabeled controls,
- Replace inaccessible custom code elements with accessible alternatives.
- Republish your site and repeat the 60-second tab test until every interactive element is reachable, visible, and operable using only the keyboard.
